Back To Strength – The Best Back Strengthening Exercises

I mentioned in my last post that I have hurt my back, it is actually the lower back that is causing me pain. I did this a few weeks ago when I worked at the Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon, and although it doesn’t hurt all the time it has been bothering me lately after all the housework I have been doing!!

Instead of stopping the housework (which I would love to do to be honest!!) I have done a load of research on the best exercises to help strengthen my back and core to help reduce the amount of pain I am getting and hopefully get rid of it and allow me to start running again!

So here are the moves that I have started to do each day: (Found on Pinterest!)

I make sure I move nice and slowly and make sure my core is engaged at all times. I repeat this set three times, with a two minute break between sets.

  • 10 Cat/Cows
  • 10 Bottom to heel stretches
  • 10 Opposite arm and leg extensions
  • 10 Back extensions
  • 10 Bridges
  • 10 Knee rolls

I have also been doing a bit of foam rollering to help release any tension in my muscles as I read that tight hamstrings can cause lower back pain! And to be honest it is a pretty good thing to do on the regs!

Now I am not a qualified PT or physio so I am not suggesting people with back pain do these moves without seeking professional advice first, I am just sharing the moves I am trying and I will see if and how they help me.
